Common questions
How do I write amounts on a cheque?
Write the amount in words on the line starting with 'Rupees'. Use Indian numbering (lakhs, crores), capitalize the first letter, and end with 'Only'. Draw a line after 'Only' to prevent tampering. Example: 'Rupees Twelve Lakh Fifty Thousand Only ___________'.
Should I write paise on a cheque?
Yes, if the amount has paise (decimal). Write 'Rupees Twelve Lakh Fifty Thousand and Fifty Paise Only'. If no paise, just write 'Only' after the rupee amount.
What if I make a mistake writing the amount?
Do not overwrite or use correction fluid. Cancel the cheque by writing 'CANCELLED' across it and issue a fresh cheque. Banks may reject cheques with corrections in the amount field.
Is there a difference between lakh and lac?
Both spellings are acceptable in India. 'Lakh' is more common in modern usage, while 'lac' is traditional. Banks accept both. This calculator uses 'Lakh' for consistency.
